Tricky translations

Here, we look at words that are difficult to translate because they have several meanings.

How do you say ausgeben in English?

1. Generally, we translate (Geld) ausgeben as spend (money): Ich bin bereit, mehr auszugeben, wenn ich ein heimisches Unternehmen unterstützen kann. “I’m willing , to spend more if I can support a local business.”

2. If you want to describe spending a lot of money on something, you can use the expressions splurge on sth. (ifml.) or splash out on sth. (UK ifml.): Die Firma hat sehr viel Geld für ihr 25-jähriges Jubiläum ausgegeben. , “The company splashed out on its 25th anniversary.”

3. During a game, you can deal (the) cards (Karten (aus-) geben) and buy a round (of drinks) (eine Runde ausgeben): Gib zuerst die Karten aus, dann gebe ich eine Runde aus! “Deal the cards first, then I’ll buy a round!” ,

4. When used in the context of stocks and shares, we translate etw. ausgeben as issue sth.: Die Firma wird wahrscheinlich keine neuen Aktien ausgeben. “The company , probably won’t be issuing any new shares.”

5. In a completely different context, (sich) als jmdn./etw. ausgeben means “pretend to be someone or something one is not” and is best translated as pass (oneself) off as sb./sth. or impersonate sb.: Sie hatten sich als Polizisten/polizistinnen ausgegeben. “They passed , themselves off as police officers.”
