A blend of culinary cultures

- By Michael Schwab

Coffee house culture has a long tradition in Vienna. One of the city’s most traditional luxury hotels is pushing alternatives from all over the world. An on-site inspection at the “Hotel Bristol, Vienna.”

Introductory words seem out of place: the architectural jewel right next to the Vienna State Opera House has been the epitome of the classic Grand Hotel since its opening in 1892 and is a household name far beyond Austria‘s borders. Instead of focusing on the external values, we would prefer to concentrate on the internal ones at this point.

Piece of art

In art deco style with a historical ambience that is unrivalled in Vienna the in-house restaurant “Bristol Lounge” offers typical Austrian delicacies, exquisite specialities and international classics served in the elegant salon. “All Day Dining” is the motto here, spanning the spectrum from breakfast to a multi-course dinner menu. The “Original Afternoon Tea” is worth a special mention - it is available in a classic version, version especially for children, and thanks to director Simone Dulies, who herself prefers a vegan diet, it is also available in such one. The hotel‘s location in the heart of the cultural metropolis makes it the perfect meeting place for the cultural scene. In the oldest American bar in the country, the “Bristol Bar,” you will be greeted with one of the best traditional drinks - “Old Fashioned”. If you are however in the mood for something caffeinated, you can order the Viennese substitutes Melange and Mokka instead of cappuccino or espresso. Only the notoriously gruff service of the Viennese waiters has to be dispensed in favor of hospitality.
