The Arab wedding singer pricked some western ears with his take on dabke , the traditional folk music of his native Syria. Soon lauded by the likes of Björk and Damon Albarn, he has become somewhat of a cult figure in Europe and the United States. With up-tempo, stomping beats and polyrhythmic keyboard lines, his music is irresistibly danceable, fittingly accompanied with romantic lyrics for weddings. His more recent work reveals feelings about his exile from his native land. “Oh I’m tired of looking for home, and asking about my loved ones” – a line from his latest record, To Syria, With Love.
