Grandmaster Flash

The music legend throws an audio-visual block party for the history of Hip Hop

METROPOLE - Vienna in English - - CULTURE MUSIC -

With Hip Hop entering something resembling maturity, it pays to remember its roots – those heady days when pioneering musicians were still defining the genre. Fortunately, the seminal founding father Grandmaster Flash is holding a master class with his latest event Hip Hop, People, Places and Things, an audio-visual trip down memory lane to tickle any B-boy’s fancy. Originating from the South Bronx, Flash developed mixing techniques on vinyl and incorporated beats, samples and scratching during block parties in the 1970s; with MCS like Melle Mel and Keef Cowboy among others rapping alongside his Djing, the musical fabric of Hip Hop was born. Together with his group, Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five, he was the first Hip Hop act entered into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Other accolades include an induction into the Grammy Hall of Fame and the Urban Music Awards’ Lifetime Achievement, as well as others. Due to his influential contributions to Hip Hop, the New York Times dubbed him the “first virtuoso” of the genre. The (grand)master now takes a look back at the styles he helped create in his interactive, block party-style show, sharing the tricks and techniques of DJS that normally go unnoticed, exposing the genius behind the grooves.
