Gegen Identitäts-politik

Mark Lilla ist Professor für Ideengeschichte an der Columbia University in New York. Sein Buch „The Once and Future Liberal“hatte in den USA sehr große Bedeutung, als rund um die Demokratische Partei diskutiert wurde, warum man die Präsidentenwahl gegen Donald Trump verloren habe. Lilla wird auch im deutschsprachigen Raum stark rezipiert, unter anderem durch den Theatermacher Bernd Stegemann (prozukunft 2018/1), der eine relevante Rolle bei der neuen Bewegung „aufstehen“um Sahra Wagenknecht spielt. Aber auch Bücher wie das des Österreichers Robert Pfaller (prozukunft 2018/3), stehen in dieser Tradition. Das vorliegende Buch geht davon aus, dass die amerikanische Linke in der Krise sei. nen Mangel an Vorstellungskraft und Ambition auf der „Angebotsseite“und eine Krise des Zugehörigkeitsgefühls und des Vertrauens gegenüber der Linken auf der Seite der Bevölkerung. Lilla sieht den Hauptgrund dafür in der zunehmenden Fokussierung auf Identitätspolitik. „With the end of the Roosevelt Dispensation and the rise of a unified and ambitious right, American liberals faced a serious challenge: to develop a fresh political vision of the country’s shared destiny, adapt to the new realities of American society and chastened by the failures of old approaches. Liberals failed to do this. Instead they threw themselves into the movement politics of identity, losing a sense of what we share as citizens and what binds us as a nation.“(S. 8f.) Die Rhetorik der Identität hätte die Klassenanalyse an den Rand gedrängt, die gerade aufgrund der Entwicklung der neuen Technologien zu erneuern sei.

The fourth has to do with the urgent need for civic education in an increasingly individualistic and atomized nation.“(S. 102) S. W.
