Interview

Every month, our interview partners from around the English-speaking world tell us about themselves. This month, we talk to Trystan Forbes-forsyth, a 17-yearold air cadet.

What are air cadets?

We’re the junior section of the RAF (Royal Air Force). It’s for young people aged 12 to 21. We meet two evenings a week.

What do you do?

On Tuesdays, we do “air studies”, which is the theory of flying. On Thursdays, we do lots of different activities, like shooting, adventure training, aeroplane modelling, flying remote controlled planes, learning leadership skills and things like that. Sometimes we go on trips — camping, for example, or to air museums — and we help at the local air show.

Do you get the chance to go flying?

Yes. We’ve been up in a Chinook helicopter — that was my favourite — and we can go up in big military planes. We can learn to fly powered gliders, and we can try parachuting as well.

Do you want to join the RAF after finishing school?

No. I like planes, but I don’t like flying. I want to work in finance.
