A dry run
Uganda’s farmers are in a dilemma. In the wet season, they grow more fruit and vegetables than they can sell, so up to 40 per cent of the produce goes bad. In the dry season, the farmers can’t grow enough food, and many people go hungry.
Now engineering student Lawrence Okettayot, 23, is travelling across Uganda, selling a device he invented called the Sparky Dryer, which dries fresh fruit and vegetables so that they keep for months. It costs around US$ 80 and could help to feed people all year round.
