Nnedi Oko­rafor is chang­ing the face of science fic­tion and fan­tasy lit­er­a­ture by cre­at­ing African sto­ries and char­ac­ters in those gen­res. Oko­rafor, 44, was born in the US, but from an early age, she be­gan vis­it­ing Nige­ria, her par­ents’ home coun­try. These vis­its in­spired her sto­ries. She has writ­ten 12 books. Now her novel Who Fears Death is be­ing adapted for TV. Oko­rafor is also writ­ing a spin-off of the pop­u­lar Black Pan­ther comic se­ries. She told the BBC: “I’m very in­ter­ested in sto­ries of com­plex, flawed African women and girls, be­cause I feel like their sto­ries need to be told, and in those sto­ries, they need to win.”
