Try our pull-out card game and test your English

How well do you know your English idioms? And what about synonyms, opposites, compound words and British versus American English vocabulary? On the next four pages, you can first see how good your English is in each category and then play our fun memory-style game using that language.

Here’s what you need to do: complete the box below using the words in green. In the first list of green words you’ll find category names; in the second, you’ll find examples for words and phrases belonging into that category. Words in the same-coloured squares belong together. We have done the first few for you. Check your answers at the bottom of the page.

Now, see if you can remember the words and expressions as well as the categories they belong in by playing the game with the 20 cards opposite and on the next double page. You will need at least two people. Tear out all the cards, shuffle them and lay them out face down. The youngest player randomly turns over two cards. Are they a pair of matching opposites or two halves of a compound word, for example? If the cards match, the player can keep the pair. You can double-check by looking at the coloured square on the lower corner of the cards. They should be the same. If not, the player turns the cards back over and the next player takes their turn. At the end, the player with the most pairs of cards wins.

If you have enjoyed the game, why not try the full version of Duo — Double Up!? Created in partnership between Spotlight and Grubbe Media, the game has 200 cards and nine categories. Find out more by going to: spotlight-online.de/double-up
