I Care a Lot (Netflix), from film director J. Blakeson, gives us Marla, a woman who makes a living by finding wealthy older people and getting the local courts to appoint her as their legal guardian. This enables her to put them in a care facility, isolate them from their families and sell her victims’ property and belongings. Then, one of her victims turns out to have more powerful relatives than expected. Playing the part of Marla, Rosamund Pike delivers an astonishing performance as a woman with no moral centre, challenging our expectations of women as caregivers, not care exploiters. If this character were male, would we react differently? A fascinating, if uncomfortable, question.
