The message of this poem is a simple one: Iiwoulld giive you the world if I could, but I can offfferryou onlly my drreamss..

The poet iis speaking directly to the object offhiis llove..he would give her the sky (“the heavens””)),,whiich he describes as pieces of rriich clloth that change throughout the day and iinto the night (“the blue and the dim and tthe dark”),,allways beautifully decorated ((““embrroiiderred” and “enwrought”) with the gollden and siillver light of the sun, moon and ssttarrs..he wiishes he could spread these cloths atttthe feet of his love, as a tribute. In reality, as he iis onlly a man,,and only a poor man, he can offer nothing except his dreams..he begs his would-be lover to treat him kiindlly ((“Trread softly”) and not to destroy hiis hopes fforr future happiness.
