Without a doubt, innovation came from the textile makers, technology companies and wash houses. Both and have invested talent, energy and resources in the development of denim fabrics that are highly sustainable and innovative.
Also, the ever-improving finishing technologies of and in denim manufacturing are both to be praised as courageous and inspiring.
I am expecting design to be at the service of circularity. Long gone are the denim designers: we need more industrial designers specialized in denim and knowledgeable developers who are able to translate ideas into long- lasting products that are as sustainable as possible.
As someone who despises indiscriminate consumerism, this is a difficult question to answer. However, I do hope that denim as a textile, not just as five-pocket pants, will become a durable and beautiful fabric to be employed on a larger selection of products – one that can be used, abused and recycled.
