Karabakh mobile application presented

- By Rashid Shirinov

During the presentation, AGAT Chairman Lala Mehdiyeva noted that the main goal of “Karabagh” project, implemented with the support of the Council of State Support to NGOs under President of Azerbaijan, is to bring Karabakh realities to the public through new technologies, to provide free and convenient receiving of daily information by Azerbaijanis, local and foreign experts on the ArmeniaAzerbaijan Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, as well as to gather into a mobile database information about Karabakh in accordance with modern requirements.

She added that one of the main advantages of this project is that users will be able to receive all the news quickly as notifications without visiting a website. Mehdiyeva noted that the mobile application will support three languages and is intended mainly for foreign audiences.

Vusal Guliyev, head of the Sector for work with youth organizations under the Azerbaijani Presidential Administration’s Social and Political Department, in turn, said that the fact that this project concerns Karabakh significantly increases its importance.

He added that today the main attention in obtaining information is paid to Karabakh, and the world community will be able to learn the truth about Karabakh through the mobile application.

“I am glad that NGOs are also actively involved in the initiatives related to Karabakh. This shows that civil society in Azerbaijan is developing. Ten years ago, NGOs did not come up with such projects,” Guliyev said.

He added that the new mobile application is also a call to the country’s NGOs.

“This is an appeal to our NGOs to be involved in this process, to come up with various initiatives. At the same time, this is an appeal to donor organizations to take into account creation of such type of applications in the future,” Guliyev noted.

Chairman of the New Azerbaijan Party’s Youth Wing Seymur Orujov, in turn, said that Azerbaijan is now able to bring the realities of Karabakh to the world through information technologies.

“This is a very important issue for us. Our students abroad and Diaspora organizations should use this application widely and actively work on its distribution,” he said.

The Nagorno-Karabakh conflict began in 1988 when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan. As a result of the ensuing war, in 1992 Armenian armed forces occupied 20 percent of Azerbaijan, including the Nagorno-Karabakh region and seven surrounding regions. More than 20,000 Azerbaijanis were killed and over 1 million were displaced as a result of the large-scale hostilities. The 1994 ceasefire agreement was followed by peace negotiations.

Until now, Armenia controls fifth part of Azerbaijan’s territory and rejects implementing four UN Security Council resolutions on withdrawal of its armed forces from Nagorno-Karabakh and surrounding regions.
