Palestinian Foreign Minister Riyad al-Maliki paid an official visit to Azerbaijan on November 5. As part of his visit, he met with Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and attended the meeting of the ambassadors of the State of Palestine accredited to Asian countries.

Ilham Aliyev said that Azerbaijan always showed solidarity and support on the Palestinian issue.

He noted that the fact that Azerbaijan is hosting a meeting of the ambassadors of the State of Palestine accredited to Asian countries is an obvious example of this.

The head of state said Azerbaijan supports two-state solution to the Palestinian issue in accordance with relevant resolutions and decisions of the United Nations, adding that this stance has been unambiguously expressed at international organizations. He noted that Azerbaijan is making continuing contribution to the strengthening of the Islamic solidarity.

On behalf of the State of Palestine, the minister expressed his deep gratitude to President Ilham Aliyev for Azerbaijan`s hosting the meeting of the ambassadors of the State of Palestine accredited to Asian countries as well as different humanitarian events relating to Palestine in previous years.

Riyad al-Maliki hailed the Azerbaijani President`s participation and speech in the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation`s Extraordinary Summit of Al-Quds issue held in Istanbul on December 13, 2017. The Palestinian foreign minister said Azerbaijan enjoys great respect and influence in the international community, expressing hope that the country will successfully chair the Non-Aligned Movement in 20192022.

Riyad al-Maliki, speaking at the meeting of Palestinian ambassadors in Asian countries, said that Azerbaijan's support on the issue of Jerusalem is important for Palestine.

Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Elmar Mammadyarov addressing the opening session of the conference noted with satisfaction the decision to host the gathering as a response to request made by the Palestinian side and underlined the continuous support of Azerbaijan to the brotherly People of Palestine in their struggle to achieve peace, stability and sustainable development.

Mammadyarov stressed that Azerbaijan consistently stands for the two-state solution of the Palestinian issue with East Jerusalem as the capital of the State of Palestine.

It was noted that Azerbaijan hosted several international events on Palestine, including an international conference on the issue of Jerusalem, which was held last year in Azerbaijan with participation of the UN Committee on the Exercise of the Inalienable Rights of the Palestinian People, the United Nations Coordination Office for Humanitarian Affairs, the OIC, and various non-governmental and civil society organizations.

Also, it was emphasized that Azerbaijan always supports Palestinian people in difficult times and is committed to Islamic solidarity. Vivid example of this support is the allocation of $200,000 to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) by Azerbaijan in October 2018.

Mammadyarov briefed the conference participants on Armenia's aggressive policy and its consequences against Azerbaijan, stressing that UN Security Council's four resolutions on the immediate and unconditional release of the occupied territories of Azerbaijan have not yet been implemented.

The Azerbaijani foreign minister also informed the participants of the conference about the activities of Azerbaijan within the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), considerable contribution of Azerbaijan to the cause of Islamic Solidarity, as well as initiatives launched and events organized in this regard.

Riyad al-Maliki expressed his gratitude for continuous support of Azerbaijan to the People of Palestine in their struggle to achieve peace and underlined that the decision to host the conference of Ambassadors of Palestine in Asian states is a vivid example to it.

Riyad al-Maliki, responding to the question of Trend on NagornoKarabakh conflict, said that Palestine shares the position of Azerbaijan on the conflict.

He said Palestine is a supporter of the implementation of international laws.

"We believe that the best way to obtain full support from the international community is to comply with international laws and implement resolutions adopted by the UN Security Council," said Riyad al-Maliki.
