The South Caucasus region is known as a particularly active seismic zone, with thousands of earthquakes in Azerbaijan recorded every year.

Earthquakes with a magnitude of more than 5.0 are rare cases despite the fact that about 4,000 earthquakes struck the country in 2018.

The recent powerful earthquake, which hit in the Caucasus Mountains close to the city of Shamakhi in Azerbaijan’s Ismayilli region, caused major damages to the houses of local population.

In accordance with the instruction of First Vice President Mehriban Aliyeva, volunteers of the Heydar Aliyev Foundation were directly involved in this work. Representatives of the public association, who visited the houses of all residents, collect information about the problems that have arisen as a result of the earthquake and work together with the corresponding executive structures to solve them.

President Aliyev arrived in quake-hit Shamakhi on February 7.

The Minister of Emergency Situations, Colonel-General Kamaladdin Heydarov and the head of the Shamakhi region Executive Power Tahir Mammadov informed the head of state about the consequences of the disaster on February 5 and 6.

President Aliyev inspected the buildings that damage d as a reslut of the earthquake, and talked with residents.

The last earthquake was recorded at 04:25 local time, 9 km south of the Pirgulu station, in the territory of Ismayilli region. Three of the tremors were felt.

Shamakhi is considered one of the most seismically active regions in Azerbaijan. The ancient Shamakhi city experienced earthquakes many times during its existence – in 1667, 1669, 1671, 1806, 1859, 1872 and 1902.

Currently, 35 seismic stations of the National Center for Seismological Service of ANAS have been installed in the country, using satellite communications in their work. In addition, it is planned to install an additional five stations on land.
