“Complimenti Signor Chichi,” the crowd cheered. Chichi wiped away tears, leaving the kitchen and his chopped squids, and reached for a glass of white wine. “Sono l’uomo piu felice del mondo,” he said, translating to, “I am the happiest person on Earth.” For a few moments, his eyes were dreamily looking at the small board at the entrance of his seaside restaurant. “I asked God where happiness was. He smiled at me and pointed to Kasos Island.” Chichi knew the words by heart. After all of these years on a remote, winds wept Greek island, in the middle of nowhere, he still remembered his roots from Abruzzo, Italy. His father, Francesco, was a military officer of the Italian Army and came to the island in the 1940s as part of the Axis occupying forces. He fell in love with the naked beauty of the island, the creativity, and the survival instinct of its inhabitants. When he returned to Italy after the war, Francesco would share his impressions on Kasos with his son, Signor Chichi. Inspired by his father’s tales, Chichi decided to move to Kasos to see it for himself. He never looked back. He married, opened a restaurant on a beautiful beach, and found his haven.
