Chichi reminds me of Joao, my Portuguese friend who uncovered the secrets of the beautiful island of Sao Vicente, in Cabo Verde Islands. Joao was a successful Lisbonite, a quality manager in textile factories. He led a very urban and glamorous life until a moment of extreme crisis. Joao had lost everything, including his wife, job, and friends. Disappointed, he felt that he needed a change in his life. The opportunity came through a Chinese company’s invitation to do short-term consultancy on Cabo Verde. He stayed for a couple of months and then, just before boarding the plane back home, he paused for a minute and asked himself the question that defined his future life, “Who is genuinely waiting for me at home?” He could not find the answer. He looked back at the rough sea and under the background, nostalgic tunes of Cesaria Evora, he understood that his life had just changed. He went back to Sao Vicente and first started to repair cars. Then, he bought a car and a boat and turned himself into a guide. When we met, he seemed to be a genuinely happy person. His local girlfriend seemed just as happy as he was. He told me, “You need very few things for happiness. I have two pairs of shoes and two shirts. It’s enough for here. I have a whole sea in front of me at all times. I found happiness here.”
