Tasnim Saleh, a Campus Academic Coordinator at SAE Institute Dubai was awarded the Student Engagement Award for Africa and Middle East as part of the 2015 Global Innovation Awards held by Turnitin, Tasnim won the award for her expertise in student engagement from a pool of more than 400 applications. The Global Innovation Awards programme recognises educators and technology administrators from around the world who have demonstrated excellence in promoting academic integrity, student engagement and the innovative use of Turnitin--the cloudbased service that helps educators evaluate student work-- and other educational technologies to support learning in their institutions. Tasnim’s award reflects on her expertise and interest in the fields of Higher Education and Student Engagement and demonstrates the push by SAE Dubai, the worldwide private college in creative media industries, to increase the quality of education in new media in the region. Her educational background has focused on providing support to students who require additional assistance, ensuring that they do not fall by the wayside as can easily happen in large institutions. In an interview with Turnitin, Tasnim explained that students often find academic writing a challenge, as she identified that students were struggling with even the basic concepts of academic writing such as paraphrasing. Tasnim has helped her students tackle this challenge by establishing what she calls a student training programme. The programme uses Turnitin as a tool to address these gaps in understanding and knowledge. Tasnim has worked with the college since 2012. In her current role she oversees all academic matters on campus and is in a unique position to further foster the good teaching and academic practices as demonstrated by this award.
