A video of seasoned Lebanese journalist Marcel Ghanem flipping the finger, while unaware of being caught on cam, in the course of a radio interview on Sawt El Ghad’s morning show Ya Rima began circulating online on November 23, amid a storm of reactions from the Lebanese public. In response to the frenzy of questioning and criticism, Ghanem issued an official statement noting that the gesture was solely aimed at his attackers and those who have previously threatened/ disrespected him. But the story does not stop here: the iconic gesture quickly turned into a meme as jokes of all sorts flooded the internet, thereby gifting Lebanese social media the viral meme of the year no one saw coming.
