How one Super Bowl Commercial Won Over The World

-

In a quite unexpected musical (or shall we say music-ad?) mashup that has rightfully been dubbed ‘the rap battle of the 21st century’, Pepsico won over viewers (and the Internet) in its two-in-one Doritos Blaze vs. Mountain Dew Ice super bowl commercial, featuring Game of Thrones star Peter Dinklage and acclaimed actor Morgan Freeman. To sum it up quickly, the ad starts on the Doritos side with Dinklage spitting out flames to Busta Rhymes’ iconic verse from Chris Brown’s ‘Look at Me Now’ and suddenly shifts into Mountain Dew territory where Freeman expertly lipsynchs to Missy Eliott’s ‘Get Ur Freak On’. The original rappers also made an appearance as moving portraits behind the actors, adding an even cooler twist to the ad. “I feel that it's one of the best commercials in Super Bowl history… Our culture of hip-hop is being properly represented. It's a great bag of energy and vibes. I loved doing it, the experience on [the] set was incredible and watching people's energy over it was even more fulfilling for me,” Busta Rhymes even told Billboard. Memorable, eccentric and groovy, the improbable face-off proved to be a winning creative move for Pepsico on all fronts and has won over the Internet ever since it aired, racking up over 2 million views on Youtube alone to date.
