IRISH SINGER #SINEADOCONNOR’S CONVERSION TO ISLAM SPARKS TWITTER CONTROVERSY
On October 19, Irish musician Sinead O’connor announced her conversion to Islam in a tweet, changing her name to Shuhada' Davitt. “This is to announce that I am proud to have become a Muslim. This is the natural conclusion of any intelligent theologian’s journey. All scripture study leads to Islam. Which makes all other scriptures redundant. I will be given (another) new name. It will be Shuhada’,” the singer wrote in a statement that sparked controversy among twitter users as some tweeted their support while others voiced their opposition to the decision, which they felt was a step backwards for her womanhood. O’connor followed her initial tweet with a series of complementing tweets, some of which being videos of her reciting the adhan with her hijab on. But the controversy reached its peak on November 9 following a tweet many users deemed unnecessarily offensive. “I'm terribly sorry. What I'm about to say is something so racist I never thought my soul could ever feel it. But truly I never wanna spend time with white people again (if that's what non-muslims are called). Not for one moment, for any reason. They are disgusting,” the tweet read, prompting numerous racism accusations against the musician.
