PROUDEST MOMENT | Nadine Labaki’s Capharnaüm Awarded Jury Prize in Cannes

Lebanese filmmaker Nadine Labaki’s latest feature film Capharnaüm premiered at the 2018 Cannes Film Festival on May 17, earning a 15-minute standing ovation from the audience. A couple days later, the film went on to win the coveted Jury Prize in the official competitio­n, following rave reviews from critics and the internatio­nal press. Labaki’s achievemen­t was widely celebrated both in the media and on social media, reinforcin­g her status as one of the most successful women filmmakers in the Arab World. Centered around Zain, a 12-year-old boy born without a birth certificat­e who decides to sue his own parents for bringing him into the world, Capharnaüm was also a top contender for the Palme d’or, which ultimately went to Japanese family drama ‘Manbiki Kazoku’ (Shoplifter­s).
