WORLD LEFT IN OUTRAGE OVER #SRILANKA EASTER SUNDAY MASSACRE
April 21 was not just another Easter Sunday for Sri Lanka as three of the country’s churches and three of its luxury hotels were targeted in an unprecedented series of orchestrated terrorist bombings, leaving 258 people dead and over 500 injured. Church bombings were carried out during Easter services at St. Anthony's Shrine in Colombo, St. Sebastian's Church in Negombo and Zion Church in Batticaloa, while affected hotels included Colombo’s Shangri-la, Cinnamon Grand and Kingsbury hotels. All suicide bombers were subsequently revealed to be Sri Lankan citizens associated with local militant Islamist group National known for its foreign ties Thowheeth Jama'ath, and it did not take long for the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) to claim responsibility for the attack two days later. The massacre instantly became the top trending topic on Twitter worldwide as users took to the platform to voice their outrage and express sympathy with the victims, but it was former US President Barack Obama who took the cake over using the term ‘Easter worshippers’ as opposed to ‘Christians’ in a tweet addressing the massacre, which attracted a wave of negative criticism from conservatives in particular and Christians around the world in general. Adding fire to the flame was a subsequent tweet by fellow republican Hilary Clinton, who also used the same term in reference to victims of the attack, making the choice of words less of a coincidence and more of a strategic decision.
