The Quran Memorization Programme for Inmates of Punitive and Correctional Institutions at Dubai Police contributed to releasing hundreds of prisoners throughout the past years.

This was revealed by Ibrahim Mohamed Bumelha, Chairman of Organising Committee of the Dubai International Holy Quran Award.

The programme was launched years ago, in implementation of the directives of Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai His Highness Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum.

Through the programmes, the inmates who memorise chapters of the Holy Quran will get their jail penalty commuted depending on the number of chapters which they memorised, Bumelha explained.

The programme received an unprecedented turnout of inmates of both genders, as it was able to make some of the inmates to be memorisers of the Holy Quran.

Those inmates are sponsored by the Dubai Award, which pays them monthly salaries on their work, he added.

During this year, 97 of the inmates benefited from the programme,

including 5 who got 20 years reduction of their jail terms for memorising the Holy Quran fully.

While the jail terms of 14 inmates were commuted by 15 years for memorising 20 chapters of the Holy Quran, other 10 inmates got a reduction of 10 years of their penalties for memorising 15 chapters, 20 inmates got a cut of 5 years for memorising 10 chapters, 19 got a reduction of one year for memorising 5 chapters, and 29 got six months for memorising 3 chapters.
