Sharjah Police urge public to cotton on to caution

Sharjah Police are investigat­ing thefts of valuables from parked vehicles in the emirate. The police received a number of complaints from several vehicle owners regarding the same. Earlier, social networking sites posted warnings that an experience­d gang had been targeting parked and unattended vehicles to steal valuables from. Some of the gang members were tasked with monitoring the vehicles while others broke their windows and nicked valuables from them. A number of incidents were reported from Al Hazana where two vehicles were targets of such thefts on Wednesday.

Sharjah Police have launched several awareness campaigns alerting the public against such thefts. They also published many tips and distribute­d the lyers among the public, and had warned owners of vehicles not to leave their important valuables behind. Further, they also suggested to not to leave their valuables visible enough to lure thieves. Furthermor­e the public was also advised to park their vehicles in safe and well-lit parking lots, and avoid parking in dark sandy squares.

The police asked the public not to hesitate to report any robbery from their vehicles, or of any suspicious behaviour, by calling the police on 999. They also mentioned that the public should be able to freely contact the helpline for emergencie­s on 901. They also mentioned the contact number for minor incidents and non-emergency cases – Najeed service on toll-free service (800151) or sending SMS to 7999. The police advised people to ensure that the windows were properly shut and doors locked when parking their vehicles. They also suggested not to leave their vehicles with the engine running and unattended even for a minute.
