Snedeker stays on top at Wyndham Championship

-

WASHINGTON: Brandt Snedeker, struggling in his bid to back up a first-round 59, came alive late on Friday to stay atop the Wyndham Championship leaderboard with a two-stroke lead over DA Points.

Snedeker knew it would be hard to follow his Thursday performance, when he became just the ninth golfer to post a sub-60 round on the US PGA Tour.

Unable to build any momentum early, Snedeker was one-over through nine holes at Sedgefield Country Club in Greensboro, North Carolina.

But he regained the lead when he rolled in a 30-foot eagle putt at the par-five 15th and gave himself more breathing room with a 34-foot birdie putt at the par-three 16th as he posted three-under par 67 for a 14-under par total of 126 - his career low for 36 holes on tour.

Points, a three-time PGA Tour winner said he’d benefitted from a new set of irons -- and from playing without any expectation of making it to the Fedex Cup playoffs coming up.

‘BEEF’ STEALS SHOW

Popular English golfer Andrew Johnston surprised the crowds at the Nordea Masters on Friday by changing his trousers midway through his second round.

The 29- year-old, playing in his first tournament since June after struggling with injury, swapped his trousers for waterproofs in preparation for incoming rain. He posted a video of the incident on Twitter, with the caption “BRIEF DELAY on the course”.

Johnston, nicknamed ‘Beef’, carded a 68 to sit at two-under par at the halfway stage of the European Tour event in Gothenburg.

TWO-WAY TIE

Park Sung-hyun took advantage of an early tee time to shoot her best round of 2018 on Friday and grab a share of the clubhouse lead during the LPGA Tour’s Indy Championship.

The South Korean fired a nineunder 63 on Friday to finish in a tie with Lizette Salas at 13-under 131 as they completed their second rounds before heavy rains caused a four-hour delay.

The second round will resume early Saturday at the Brickyard Crossing Golf Course in Indianapolis, Indiana. Park said her superb performance was anchored by a strong putting day.
