HUMANITY & SOCIAL MEDIA

- Shereen Afifi

two different touching stories happened in the same country, same month. the common factors between them are children, camera and social media. the two incidents show that with a little smart device you can either change someone’s life or ruin it.

A popular photographer and blogger named brandon stanton who runs humans of new york blog has been touring egypt recently with his camera. during his visit to egypt, he was posting interviews he made with various common people. his latest posts witnessed a massive interaction from his 18 million followers on social media from all over the world.

I picked one interview he made with two little children who happened to be brother and sister. they work on streets helping people to park their vehicles. they were trying to raise money for their school fees. the little kid innocently complained that little amount of money they collected so far was not enough for school fees as she and her brother bought pepsi and peanuts.

Also, she added that her only dream was to get a bicycle. after posting the story, many global followers were trying to reach them for help. the story ended happily when pepsi arabia announced taking care of siblings’ school fees.

However, in another simple governmental school in egypt, a six-year-old child has been electronically bullied on social media. a teacher shot and posted a video of him crying hysterically. carelessly, she imagined that mocking a child on social media would be fun. that resulted in the kid being psychologically affected and refusing to attend school again.

There must be initiatives to help people regain their humanity and consider good ways to use smart devices.
