India criticises Pakistan position at the UN meeting
NEW DELHI: Union Home Minister Raj na th sing h’ s claim that“something big has happened in the past two days” at the border has sparked speculation of a confrontation with Pakistan.
Government sources were not willing to offer an explanation on Saturday. NEITHER THE Ministry of Home AFFAIRS (MHA) nor THE Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) was ready to comment.
Singh’s comment was made on Friday at a meeting in Muzafarpur, Uttar Pradesh, but was widely reported on Saturday only. It came on the eve of the second anniversary of the surgical strikes across the border that India had launched after military camps were attacked by militants from Pakistan.
Singh was discussing the killing by Pakistan troops of Border Security Force (BSF) jawan Narendra Singh along the Line of Control (LOC).
HE INDICATED that INDIAN Forces may have hit Pakistani targets across the border to avenge the brutal killing. But he remained rather secretive, saying he cannot explain details of what he is saying.
“Something has happened, I won’t disclose it now. Whatever has happened, has happened for the good. Trust me, something big has happened two-three days ago. And you will also see what happens in future,” Singh said.
“Our neighbouring country Pakistan keeps fostering unrest. It doesn’t refrain from its nefarious activities. People often raise how they mistreat our Border Security Force jawans. You might have seen something… something has happened, I won’t say what. It has happened, it has gone alright. You can believe us, it has been alright - just two-three days ago. Some people know. And you will see ahead, what happens,” he said.
“I have told the Border Security Force, they are our neighbours, don’t ire THE irst Bullet. But IF they ire THE irst one, Don’t Count How many you ire back,” he added.
Earlier this week, Army General Bipin Rawat had said he believed it was time for another surgical strike.
“I believe there is a need for one more action (surgical strike). But I would not want to disclose how we want to do it,” he had told India Today in an interview.
Meanwhile, in a bitter attack on the Congress, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday said that the partys “chhoti soch” (narrow mindedness) was stopping it from seeing any merit in celebrating the 2016 cross-loc surgical strikes on terrorist launch pads.
“We all know the attitude of the Congress on surgical strikes. They keep RAISING questions over surgical strikes even today, opposing the government and opposing the nation’s armed forces? Also doubting the armed forces’ valour and courage?” he said while addressing the BJP workers in Rajasthan’s Chittorgarh through video conferencing.
“In their bid to oppose the government, they began opposing the nation. This antagonism has become the character of the Congress party,” he added.
Responding to A question By A BJP worker, Modi said that the opposition HAD Even questioned THE utility of THE Pokhran-ii nuclear tests and the Congress party did not even see any merit in observing the Kargil Vijay Diwas.
“The Congress does not observe the Kargil Vijay Diwas even today. One of their leaders said they could not see any reason to celebrate the Kargil victory as the war was fought on India’s land, that this victory is meaningless. They said it was an Nda-era war and so NDA could celebrate it. Such narrow mindedness, lowly thinking,” Modi said.
