Ministry lays down rules for student dismissal

ABU DHABI: The Ministry of Education has obligated school administrations to list the attendance and absence of their respective students per classes during the school day, where a full day of absence will be calculated if a student is absent from one class or more during the school day without permission or justiied excuse.

Based on this, a student will be dismissed from school in case of unjustiiable absence for 10 consecutive days or 15 interrupted days throughout the academic year, provided that dismissal will be preceded by 3 warning letters at the rate of one warning letter for each 3-day absence.

The school has also the right to dismiss a student on the recommendation of the school’s educational committee and the approval of the concerned educational authority or if a inal judgment is issued against him in a felony or misdemeanour that violates honour or honesty rules.

In all cases, the dismissal decision will be issued by the school principal and approved by the education district and will be notiied to the student’s parents.

A number of Abu Dhabi school principals at different levels of education called for the return of the system where a student’s behaviour is assessed by means of a speciic number of degrees, noting that deducting such degrees would be the best solution to deter careless students.

Khalid Al Mansouri, a family consultant, stressed that leniency in students’ commitment to attendance and departure could affect their motivation for the educational process in general.
