BLEAK REALITY

THE world is indeed heading towards its doom as the UN Secretary-general Antonio Guterres warns, and unless we take remedial measures, the inevitable will happen (“UN chief warns of ‘chaotic’ world order,” Sept. 26, The Gulf Today).

The rampant breakdown of world order seen all over is an invitation for trouble and with international cooperation on the wane it is the countries that are militarily superior which are exerting their inluence over the rest. In fact it’s very depressing to see the morning news, because it’s all about conlicts and wars be it Syria, Yemen etc.

If not for strife provoked by external elements, its religious divides and communal tension fostered by local government that wreak havoc on the citizens. Not long back the UN was the vital body in bringing about peace in war torn regions. Today that seems to be ebbing with some irst world countries undermining its reach by using strong arm tactics, primarily cutting aid.

Though Guterres has urged world leaders to renew their commitment to a rules-based order, with the United Nations at its center, I have my doubts on the response to his call.

If one looks at the US foreign policy it points more towards discord than peace. The two-state solution to the Israeli-palestinian conlict has become more distant now while the trade war is spiraling out of control.

I don’t even want to say anything on climate change. If the ground reality is so sick the air can’t be any better. Celeste Marquis
