DUBAI: A signage designer who bit off a countryman’s ear after suspecting him of embezzling Dhs1,100 paid by a client was on Monday let off with a warning.

The Asian man, 28, brawled with the labourer, 22, over the supposed embezzlement incident. They exchanged bites that culminated in the latter’s loss of half of his left ear, prosecutors revealed.

The labourer had to undergo plastic surgery and sustained a 5 per cent permanent deformity. Prosecutors clariied that the convict did not intend to cause the deformity. He confessed in court.

He said a ight broke out between them. “He bit my left arm and I bit his ear in self-defence,” he said while gesturing. “He fell down and his ear got torn. I did not mean to bite the piece off.”

In court, the defendant revealed, “We reached an amicable settlement and forgave each other.” The labourer who was present during the court session presented a waiver to the jury.

The Dubai Criminal Court sentenced him to three months in prison to be followed by deportation but suspended the prison term. He ought not to repeat a similar crime, the court warned.

On June 4, the defendant designed a signboard for a client. The client made a Dhs500 down payment and promised to pay remaining Dhs1,100 after the installation of the signboard on his shop.

The defendant inished working on the signboard, handed it to the labourer and sent him to ix it in front of the shop. He reminded the labourer to demand the client to pay the remaining sum.

The labourer executed the installation and returned home supposedly empty-handed. He found the defendant waiting for the said sum. The defendant asked whether he got it. He answered no.

The defendant thought the labourer received the sum and was lying to him. He hurled an offensive statement involving the labourer and his sister. The labourer boiled with anger.

He smacked the defendant’s head with his shoe. They exchanged blows. The labourer dug his teeth in the defendant’s left upper arm. The defendant dug his teeth in his left ear.
