Blacksmith jailed for life over murder

DUBAI: A blacksmith who slayed a labour er for groping him and knifed the labourer’s countryman for declining to give him way was on Wednesday jailed for 25 years.

The Asian defendant, 22, disputed with the deceased Asian in the stairway of a worker’s accommodat­ion in Al Quoz Industrial area. The deceased had allegedly groped him and pestered him for an affair.

The defendant knifed him to death, and knifed his countryman in the back and thigh. This happened at around 10:30am on May 9. He, the deceased and the countryman had abused alcohol that day.

His bid to kill the deceased’s countryman fell lat after the latter escaped and ran inside his room. He was ambulanced to hospital where he responded to a medical interventi­on, prosecutor­s said.

Prosecutor­s accused the defendant of murder and attempted murder. The Dubai Criminal Court sentenced him to 25 years in jail to be followed by deportatio­n. It ordered the knife be confiscate­d.

An Emirati warrant oficer narrated that a source alerted a pursuit team the defendant was hiding near a prayer house in the area. He confessed to the crimes upon arrest and said he committed them while drunk.

He said that after drinking alcohol he purchased from hawkers behind the accommodat­ion, he climbed the stairs on his way to his room. He found the deceased and his countryman sitting on stairs.

They refused to let him pass. The deceased seized his leg and started feeling it up and down while asking him to irst sit with them for a while. He perceived the deceased wanted an indecent physical act.

He told the deceased he did not want to sit. The deceased pestered him to and touched him inappropri­ately. The defendant boiled with anger, went down the stairs and used the other side’s stairway. He went to his room.

He fetched a knife and returned to the duo face to face. The deceased asked him to sit. He demanded to know why. The deceased stretched his hand and groped him again. He pulled out a knife. They stood up trying to lee. He stabbed them.
