Men jailed for possessing 40kg drugs

DUBAI: The Dubai Criminal Court on Thursday ruled that two Asian salesman, 27, and driver, 45, be sentenced to 10 years in jail and ined Dhs50,000 each to be followed by deportatio­n after being convicted of possessing and abusing more than 40kg of marijuana and another psychotrop­ic substance.

A First Lieutenant in the General Anti-narcotics Department, Dubai Police, testiied that a tip-off was received by the department that the irst defendant possessed narcotics for trading purposes.

After taking the necessary legal measures, the police oficer and a group from the department moved to the irst defendant’s house and arrested the defendant.

ARRESTED

The irst defendant was seen wrapping marijuana in rolls of paper and bags containing marijuana were found on his bed.

A suitcase was also found under the bed. At this time, the second defendant showed up and was arrested.

On interrogat­ion, the irst defendant denied that he had anything to do with the suitcase and that it belonged to the second defendant, adding that he was asked to hide the suitcase against a sum of money.

When the suitcase was opened, the second defendant’s passport and airline ticket were found inside together with some cardboard boxes containing a quantity of the same drug.
