Man gets life term for slaying friend

DUBAI: A drug addict who butchered his friend on a street was on wednesday sentenced to life behind bars by the Dubai criminal court. the unemployed Arab man, 23, contacted the Emirati victim and lured him to the street in Oud Al Muteena around 11:30pm on Jan.22. He rode to the scene on a quad bike that he parked inside an alley.

He lurked in wait until the victim arrived. He pulled out a sword from under his clothes, jumped at him and hacked him in heinously. Before the jury he argued he could not remember anything.

The victim succumbed to the multiple injuries while being am bu lanced to hospital. THE DEFENDANT was under THE Inluence of meth and amphetamin­e, according to records at Al Qusais Police Station.

Prosecutor­s demanded the toughest penalty. “No,” he reiterated. “I don’t remember anything.” His lawyer said, “He did not mean to kill him but only wanted to chastise him for having insulted him.”

The court’s jury presided by Judge Fahd Rashid Al Shamsi sentenced him to 25 years behind bars and ordered that THE murder tool BE Coniscated.

A EMIRATI policeman testiied that he was driving home when he spotted the defendant hacking the victim. He immediatel­y pulled over and contacted the police. The defendant saw him.

The defendant dashed inside the alley, jumped onto his quad bike and sped off. THE victim, IGHTING For HIS LIFE, stood up and walked some steps towards the policeman begging him for water.

He fell down. The policeman tried to know from him who assaulted him. He said he did not know him. By the time an ambulance arrived he had lapsed into a coma. He died on the way to hospital.

The defendant walked into the police station abnormal and stained with blood. An Emirati lieutenant questioned him about the blood and he confessed he was the one who assaulted the victim. He claimed he used “a small knife.” Police discovered the stained sword in a bush along Oman Street. It bore the defendant’s DNA.
