LANKA IMBROGLIO
SOME semblance of sanity seems to returning to Sri Lanka after months of political turmoil (“Rajapaksa ends Lanka standoff,” Dec.15, The Gulf Today).
Mahinda Rajapakse decision to step down was expected after the Supreme Court banned him and his government
From EXERCISING THE powers of THE OFICE they claimed since October. What needs to follow is the immediate reinstatement of Ranil Wickremesinghe.
Without doubt the high-handed functioning of President Maithripala Sirisena led to political turmoil and THE SC ruling AGAINST HIM ratiies it. His tenure is now under a cloud as the verdict that he broke the law by dissolving parliament last month has opened the way for potential impeachment proceedings against him.
For a Sri Lankan like me, the current political mess is just another sordid event, pouring salt on our wounds. We, who are struggling to bounce back from the deadly civil war that lasted more than two decades, expect our leaders to guide the country towards
prosperity. Instead divisive personal agenda is at play.
Thanks to the intervention of the SC there is hope. The government must be installed as soon as possible because without that the country is virtually heading for a shutdown. Fears that government functioning will come to a standstill will also come true if the BUDGET For THE next iscal year Is not cleared. It’s time to act.
