Broke trader tries robbing gold shop

an in solvent muscular trader stormed a gold shop brandishin­g a meat cleaver then smashed his way through a glass façade to lee arrest, prosecutor­s revealed on Sunday.

The 50-year-old African trader had pressing personal needs to solve in his home country. He purchased a meat cleaver and stormed the jewellery shop in Al Muraqqabat area at around 11:30am on Dec.10.2018.

He brandished it threatenin­g to hack an Iranian employee, 27, and a Filipina cashier, 38. Both switched the alarm on and contacted police. On realising police was coming he punched the glass façade, shattering it.

\He jumped out and led the scene. Prosecutor­s referred him to the Dubai Criminal Court charging him with attempted armed robbery. “Yes Sir,” he confessed before the presiding judge. The ruling was set for Jan.27.

In police and prosecutio­n records, the employee narrated that he was inside the shop when the defendant entered wearing a jacket and a cap.

“He ordered me to pull out and surrender all the available gold jewellery. He threatened to hack me with a meat cleaver the size of an arm. I pressed the early warning system’s button and also told the cashier to call the police. The defendant shattered the glass door with his arm and led.”

The Filipina cashier explained, “The moment he saw me contacting the police he smashed the glass door and ran away.” Police investigat­ors landed on his jacket in the neighbourh­ood. He confessed upon arrest and revealed he threw the cleaver in a trash container.
