Hefty fine on man, sister in Whatsapp case

The Abu Dhabi Court of Cassation canceled an appeal sentencing an Arab and his sister to pay Dhs250,000 each, to a man’s ex-wife on the charges of blasphemin­g her on Whatsapp over family disputes. The court also sentenced the man to a month in jail and imposed a fine of Dhs5,000 over the insulting charge and for damaging others’ property, and obligated him to pay Dhs21,000 to the plaintiff as compensati­on.

The court fined one of the defendants’ relatives Dhs5,000 on charges of entering the room of the victim without permission.

The victim filed a complaint against her ex- husband and his sister accusing them of insulting her through Whatsapp and Youtube and threatenin­g to publish her photos.

The Public Prosecutio­n charged the ex-husband with assaulting the body of the victim, damaging her mobile phone during their life together, threatenin­g and insulting her through Whatsapp, and violating her privacy ater publishing a video of her on Youtube and Whatsapp.

The prosecutio­n also charged the sister with blasphemin­g the victim on the Whatsapp.

The Court of First Instance previously acquitted the ex-husband of the assault and the threat and convicted him of blasphemin­g on Whatsapp. The court sentenced him to one month in jail and fined him Dhs250,000 and deportatio­n, in addition to a fine of Dhs50,000 on the charge of damaging, and ordered the confiscati­on of the device used in the crime. The sister was fined Dhs250,000 and deportatio­n.

Ater the appeal, the Court of Appeal upheld the verdict with the cancellati­on of the deportatio­n.

AJMAN FIRE

The Ajman Civil Defense firefighti­ng squad doused a fire that erupted in a residentia­l flat located in the industrial area. No casualties were reported, confirmed Lieutenant Colonel Raed Obaid Al Za’bi, Deputy Director of Centers Management.

The Civil Defense’s plaform at Ajman Police on Tuesday received a tip-off reporting an apartment had caught fire in the new industrial area, Al Za’bi said.

“Immediatel­y, the firefighte­rs rushed to the location along with ambulance and the police. The civil defense teams evacuated the residentia­l building of its tenants as the firefighte­rs dealt with the fire, no injuries were caused,” he added.
