HOW CRUEL CAN YOU BE?

- Madeline S By email

The one about the woman crowing about her giraffe hunt is appalling. And strangely the woman has the gall to mention that the giraffe was a rare dark one (“Woman who posed next to dead giraffe says she is ‘proud to hunt’,” June 7, Gulf Today).

Several species of animals are already on the decline because of irresponsible humans or like the woman, humans who think that their right to pleasure is the cost of an innocent life. Like a previous story where humans get pleasure from seeing foxes mauled by their hounds, this is no different. What kind of value is atached to this trophy where one feels one has earned it because one stalked it equipped with gear to murder? The value is a dirty one, one that should deserve the proverbial curse or karma for killing a defenseless animal who was minding it’s own business.

To justify the act as that of preservation of animals by managing populations and funding wildlife conservation, is a perverted thought to say the least. What kind of conservation are we talking in regard to a giraffe here? The giraffe is herbívoros. If there is any conservation, it should be directed at humans - to ban humans from ever stepping into the habitat of the wild, because humans are undeserving of it.

The PETA president put it well : With boundless opportunities for amusement, it speaks volumes that this small subset of the human population gets its thrills from gunning down others who ask for nothing out of life but the chance to live in peace. Sadly, this is the case everywhere.
