Gulf Today

THE RIGHT DIRECTION

- Abu Ali By email

It’s good news for the Sudanese that Sudan’s ruling generals and protest leaders signed a hardwon constitutional declaration on Sunday (“Arabs hail Sudan accord as quantum leap to transition,” Aug 5, Gulf Today).

It is a milestone for the future of the country. I have a firm belief that this declaration will pave the way for a transition to civilian rule ater more than seven months of demonstrations and violence. Sudan’s Arab neighbours hailed the long-awaited deal. Under the agreement, signed at a ceremony in the capital Khartoum, a joint civilian-military ruling body will oversee the formation of a civilian government and parliament to govern for a three-year transition period. The country has been on the State Department’s list since 1993 over its alleged support of militants, a designation that has damaged the nation’s economy and severely impeded foreign investment.

Now it time to look forward and move on.
