Normal life hit as heavy rain lashes Delhi

NEW DELHI: Heavy rain lashed Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR) on Tuesday, leading to massive traffic snarls at various places.

While some parts of the capital city received heavy rainfall, others only witnessed a drizzle. In few areas trees were uprooted which led to traffic.

In South Delhi, there was bumper to bumper traffic from Maharani Bagh towards Ashram ater a tree was uprooted.

Traffic was affected from Dhaula Kuan to AIIMS due to breakdown of a vehicle. There was also a jam in Model Town due to waterloggi­ng. Near the Indraprast­ha flyover, vehicles’ movement was affected because of an overflowin­g sewer.

Waterloggi­ng made it difficult for people to step out of their homes in Dwarka and Gurugram.

Forecaster Skymet Weather’s Vice President Mahesh Palawat said on Tuesday that the monsoon turf has moved to North India and the weather will continue to remain the same till Wednesday, following which it will move to South India.

“The rains will be back in the national capital from Aug.12 onwards,” he added.

Meanwhile, commuters and office goers were swit enough to take to social media and report about traffic jams.

“Rain in Delhi and the consequenc­es of a terrible traffic jam on Delhi-meerut highway (NH-24),” a Twiter user said, along with an image of a jam for around 100 metres.

The Delhi Traffic Police (DTP) were also constantly posting updates on their Twiter handle.

Few short intense spells of rain and thundersho­wer activity is predicted for today. Light to moderate rainfall is likely till Wednesday, while on Thursday, the city will witness rain or thundersho­wers.

Traffic congestion were reported in certain areas of the city due to waterloggi­ng.

According to private weather forecaster, Skymet weather, the showers can be attributed to the northward movement of Monsoon Trough, which is coming closer to Delhi and NCR area.

On Friday, skies will be generally cloudy with the possibilit­y of rain or thundersto­rm, the IMD said.

IMD said the city will have a “generally cloudy sky” and temperatur­es for the day are predicted at maximum temperatur­e of 37 degrees Celsius and a minimum of 27 degrees Celsius.

Many parts of Delhi also witnessed rainfall on Monday, bringing respite to locals from the humid weather.
