Distinguished eye specialists from across the world meet
DUBAI: The world’s most renowned eye specialists will gather in Dubai for a conference reviewing critical developments in ophthalmology over the past 12 months and looking ahead to innovations in 2020.
Moorfields Dubai 2019: A Year in Focus is organised by Moorfields Eye Hospital Dubai. It will take place on January 9-10, 2020 at Mohammed Bin Rashid University of Medicine and Health Sciences.
A panel of 25 prominent researchers, surgeons and academics based in the UAE and internationally will focus on recent innovations in ophthalmology, anticipate how best to tackle eye diseases and degenerative conditions in the future, and hold masterclasses on procedures including vitreo-retinal, refractive and cataract surgery.
The high-calibre event is seen as one of the regions foremost gatherings of medical minds and a vital opportunity to maximise breakthroughs in the field. According to the International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness (IAPB), 36 million people are blind globally with 217 million more suffering from moderate or severe distance vision impairment. It lists glaucoma, uncorrected refractive errors, cataracts and Age-related Macular Degeneration (AMD) as the main causes of blindness and visual impairment.
Dr. Ammar Safar, Medical Director of Moorfields Eye Hospitals UAE, says: “Moorfields is proud to host such a significant event attended by some of the leading figures in ophthalmology. The exchange of ideas and experiences is critical to the pursuit of medical breakthroughs and revolutionary new techniques. Our end goal is that members of the public, including patients here at Moorfields Eye Hospital Dubai, become the long-term beneficiaries of the thoughts and suggestions shared at this conference.”
The list of Chairs and speakers include the likes of Prof. Robert Maclaren, Professor of Ophthalmology at the University of Oxford, Dr. David Chow, Director of the Toronto Retina Institute and Dr. Saleh Saif Al Messabi, an awardwinning ophthalmologist who was instrumental in introducing femto-cataract surgery to the Middle East in 2012.
