PSG’S captain Herrera, Silva out for weeks due to injuries

-

Paris: French champions Paris St Germain will be without captain Thiago Silva and midfielder Ander Herrera for several weeks, the club said, with both players set to miss the Champions League Round of 16 return leg against Borussia Dortmund on March 11.

Central defender Thiago Silva has been ruled out for an estimated three weeks with a thigh injury picked up early in the win over Girondins Bordeaux in Ligue 1 on Sunday.

Edinson Cavani scored his 200th Paris Saint-germain goal and Marquinhos netted twice as the French League leaders bounced back from their Champions League defeat by the Borussia Dortmund to beat Bordeaux 4-3 on Sunday.

Silva got hurt just before Hwang put them in front on 18 minutes.

After moving to Europe to join Milan in 2009, Silva established himself as one of the highest rated defenders in the world, winning the French League title with the Rossoneri in the 2010–11 season.

In July 2012, Paris Saint-germain signed him for a reported €42 million, making him the then second-most expensive defender in history behind Rio Ferdinand.

With PSG, Silva has won six Ligue 1 championships, five consecutive Coupes de la Ligue and four consecutive Coupe de France.

Midfielder Herrera will be sidelined for up to two months with a leg muscle injury, the club added.

In 2019, Herrera had signed a five-year contract with French Ligue 1 champions Paris Saint-germain on a free transfer.

On Sept. 14, he made his competitive debut for PSG, coming on as a substitute for Pablo Sarabia in a 1–0 win over Strasbourg.

PSG will also be missing the suspended Marco Verratti and Thomas Meunier for the return leg against Dortmund in Paris next month. They lost the first leg 2-1 in Germany.
