European inmate serving life term meets son
DUBAI: A European inmate met his only son whom he had not seen for years after Dubai Police helped reconcile them.
The inmate is serving life sentence for murder. The reunion was arranged by the General Department of Punitive and Correctional Establishments at Dubai Police during the launch of “Tomorrow, I Will Fly,” which is a collection of essays and story written by inmates of Dubai prison.
The European inmate was a part of this innovative project and the Dubai Police aimed to make him happy by arranging a meeting with his son.
Commenting on the initiative, Brigadier Ali Mohammed Al Shamali, Director of the General Department of Punitive and Correctional Establishments, said, “The initiative was a surprise to both the father and the son, and the place was filled with joy after they saw each other.
“As part of its humanitarian initiatives, the Dubai Police is keen to always spread happiness among inmates,” Al Shamali added.
The inmate and his son have expressed their sincere appreciation and gratitude to Dubai Police for this thoughtful gesture.
The Dubai Police organise several initiatives towards the welfare of its inmates.
Recently, the Correctional and Punitive Establishments at Dubai Police released more than 11,000 inmates after their debts, worth Dhs6,841,140 million, were settled by Dubai charitable associations and philanthropists.
This initiative was carried under the Dubai Police’s humanitarian approach to grant inmates a second chance to reform and start anew.
Commenting on the initiative, Brigadier Ali Mohammed Al Shamali, Director of the General Department of Correctional and Punitive Establishments at Dubai Police, said that the annual programmes, aid and initiatives of the Department reflect Dubai Police’s idea of prisons as a place of reformation rather than punishment.
He added that the Department has adopted a path of tolerance, coexistence, benevolence, and gives inmates a second chance to return to the path of righteousness once again.
“We are keen on strengthening social responsibility in coordination with charities and philanthropists to end the suffering of inmates and help them start again, improve their conditions, and solve their financial and social problems,” Brigadier Al Shamali said.
