Sterilisation drive in Sharjah sees no traffic violations

- Sohaila Ahmed, Staff Reporter

SHARJAH: Major General Saif Al Zari Al Shamsi, Commander-in-chiefofsharjahpolice,hasconfirmed that no traffic violations were committed during the UAE sterilisation programme, and that the numbers of vehicles violating curfew hours are categorised based on the claimed reason of violation.

He pointed out that the number of violations caught by radars are for vehicles which pass multiple radars on the road. Radars also captured police patrols, municipality vehicles, taxis, sterilisation teams, as well as vehicles that are exempted from movement restriction law.

Based on the above, police are categorising the registered violations. Maj. Gen. Al Shamsi also pointed out that the number of vehicles present after curfew hours are barely scarce. Pre-violation pledge

Maj. Gen. Al Shamsi explained that no fines will be issued against violated vehicles during this period of time, because the curfew was set only for the safety and protection of residents. He stressed that precautionary measures will be taken before fining motorists, as a pre-violation pledge to not commit the same violation again, in an attempt to reassure the public.

In addition, cancellation of moving permits during sterilisation program does not mean that traffic radars will not be catching violators.

Lastly, police officials urged the public to adhere to all precautionary measures in order to maintain their safety and health by staying at home and not leave unless during emergency cases.

Sharjah Police are warning the public not to commit offensive actions or behaviour that seek to obstruct the procedures taken to protect the community, or diminish the value of actions taken by those responsible of implementing preventive programs; whether by saying or committing actions that ridicule community members.

This came in response to a video that was posted to ridicule the efforts made by teams of national sterilisation programme in one of Sharjah’s neighbourhoods. The person who posted the video had also mocked residents of that neighbourhood, and was arrested and referred to the public prosecution to be legally charged for his actions.
