PEACE DEAL

-

A peace deal between the United States and the Taliban is the only way forward to end the almost two decades long war in Afghanistan (“Afghan Taliban leader says committed to deal with US,” May 20, Gulf Today).

For many decades, the poor people of Afghanistan have been facing war. The Afghan people have sacrificed their precious lives fighting against the war on terrorism.

Now, after a peace deal is signed between the United States and the Taliban, it is time for the people of the country to live their lives in a peaceful and prosperous country.

But unfortunately, terrorist attacks are still continuing in Afghanistan, as a result many people are dying every day.

It is so important for every stakeholder to honour the deal agreement signed by the United Sates and the Taliban.

According to the Taliban: “The Islamic Emirate is committedtotheagreementsignedwithamericaand urges the other side to honour its own commitments and not allow this critical opportunity to go waste.”

US President Donald Trump’s administration has made it a priority to end the war in Afghanistan, and in a bid to withdraw foreign forces US officials have been pushing the Taliban and Afghan leaders to hold peace talks.

Under the accord, the Taliban pledged to stop attacking cities and foreign forces, but has continued to target Afghan forces in the provinces. There is no doubt that terrorist attacks are continuing in Afghanistan and many poor people have died after even signing of the peace deal with the United States and the Taliban.

There is a deadlock between the Taliban and the Afghan government on prisoner exchange, which is most important point in the peace deal between the United States and the Taliban.

The Afghan war is the longest war the US fought ever in the world, but the result of this war has been only destruction, killings and economic disaster.

The peace deal is the best chance for not only a peaceful Afghanistan but also for peace in the region. I hope all sides will work together with honesty to bring about peace in Afghanistan.
