Rajni vows to launch party in 2021

- Nirmala Joseph

CHENNAI: Even as Tamil Nadu awaited the arrival of Cyclone Burevi on Thursday, megastar Rajnikanth stirred up a political storm by announcing he will form his oufit in January 2021.

The conversion of Rajni Makkal Manram into a political party is certain to shake up Tamil Nadu as it votes in April/may for a new state assembly.

Taking to Twiter, the actor said he would make an announcement on his party on Dec.31. Promising that everything would undergo a change now, Rajni said “if not now, it will be never.” “It is certain that, we will secure a massive victory in the ensuing Assembly polls with the support of the people, and create a straight-forward, honest, transparent, corruption-free secular and egalitarian spiritual politics.

“Wonder and Mircales will happen.” He had met Manram district secrtaries on Monday and discussed the formation of his party. It is known that Rajni had been reluctant to expose himself in campaigns as he has had a kidney transplant and risked an atack of COVID-19.

On Thursday, he met the media and said his party would bring “spiritual secular politics” with no caste or religion. “It’s now or never,” he said and added: “We will change, we will change everything. I am ready to sacrifice even my life for the sake of Tamil people. It is now or never.

“If I win it will be the people’s victory, even if I lose it will be their defeat.” Rajnikanth announced Tamilaruvi Manian as in-charge of his political party and Arjun Murthy as co-ordinator.

“In fact, I can’t even think of siting in the Assembly and going through those proceedings! I will be the party chief, and the CM will be someone who is educated, who is far-sighted. He will be a person who can govern. And the party chief will be like an opposition leader we will be the first to question if anything wrong happens. We will not interfere with the governance there will not be two parallel power centres,” he said.

The cyclonic storm Burevi was expected to show its impact on south Tamil Nadu coastal districts from evening of Thursday.

Ater having crossed the Sri Lankan coast, it has moved nearly west-northwestwards, to emerge into Gulf of Mannar and adjoining Comorin area.

The storm, with wind speed of 70-80 gusting to 90kph, would be centred very close to Pamban by evening, Met officials said.

“It would then move west-southwestwards across Pamban and cross south Tamil Nadu coast between Pamban and Kanniyakumari tonight and Friday early morning as a cyclonic storm with wind speed of 70-80 gusting to 90 kph.
