New Marseille coach Sampaoli faces wait before taking charge

-

MARSEILLE: New Marseille coach Jorge Sampaoli arrived in France on Tuesday ready to take up his new post, the Ligue 1 club announced, but the 60-year-old is expected to first go into self-isolation for seven days ater coming into the country from Brazil.

The Argentine, who has spent the last year in Brazil coaching Atletico Mineiro, was appointed by Marseille last Friday.

The ex-chile, Argentina and Sevilla boss, who has signed a contract until 2023, is the permanent successor to Andre Villas-boas in charge of the former Champions League winners.

“I am very happy to be here,” said Sampaoli. “I arrive in Marseille with a lot of hope and expectation, with a club that I have been following for a long time. I can’t wait to start.

“I hope that we will live up to the demands of the Marseille fans, because it is the most important thing in football.

“I have enormous respect for this popular support and I will do whatever I can in this difficult period of the pandemic for supporters to be happy. Villas-boas was suspended by the club a month ago following a disagreement over transfers. On Tuesday, Marseille confirmed that they had finally officially parted company with the portuguese“by mutual agreement ”.

Since Villas-boas was removed from the dugout, interim coach Nasser Larguet has overseen the team’s last seven games, losing just once, to Paris Saint-germain.

“I treated the club like it was my own,” VillasBoas said in an Instagram post on Tuesday. “I have always carried with me the honour and dignity that I thought you deserved.”

Larguet will still be in charge when OM, who are seventh in Ligue 1, go to table-toppers Lille on Wednesday as part of a full card of midweek fixtures.

French government regulations stipulate that anyone entering the country from outside Europe must self-isolate for seven days on arrival and present a negative Covid-19 test at the end of that period.

“I don’t see how he can get out of it,” one source inside the club told.

It will mean the first game he can take charge of will be the league game against Rennes on March 10. Rennes have chosen Bruno Genesio as their new coach to replace juli en step han, whore signed earlier this week, a source close to the French Ligue 1 club confirmed to AFP on Wednesday.
