Workshop on global design for People of Determinat­ion held

This is part of Dewa’s initiative­s to include and empower People of Determinat­ion at work and in society and make them happier

As a government socially responsibl­e organisati­on that includes People of Determinat­ion, Dubai Electricit­y and Water Authority (DEWA) organised a virtual workshop entitled ‘Best local and internatio­nal practices in universal design for People of Determinat­ion.’ DEWA organised the workshop in collaborat­ion with the Ministry of Community Developmen­t; Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisat­ion; Community Developmen­t Authority; Dubai Government Human Resources Department; Dubai Police; Roads & Transport Authority; Dubai Municipali­ty; Dubai Health Authority; Knowledge and Human Developmen­t Authority; Dubai Statistics Center; Dubai Tourism; Dubai Media Incorporat­ed; Dubai Courts; Dubai Airport; and Dubai Club for People of Determinat­ion. The workshop aimed at sharing DEWA’S best practices in the field of internatio­nal practices in universal design for People of Determinat­ion with government partners and exchanging knowledge on including and empowering people of determinat­ion (POD) at work and in society.

In line with the National Policy for Empowering People of Determinat­ion, launched by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, to create an inclusive society that ensures empowermen­t and a decent life for people of determinat­ion and their families; and the ‘My community... a city for everyone’ initiative, launched by His Highness Sheikh Hamdan Bin Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and Chairman of the Executive Council of Dubai, to transform Dubai into a friendly city for People of Determinat­ion; DEWA is commited to including and empowering them according to the best local and internatio­nal practices. We are also commited to providing the necessary support to them to achieve the government’s efforts to create a cohesive and inclusive society as well as the best place to live and work,” said Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, MD & CEO of DEWA.

“We are pleased to share DEWA’S experience­s and best practices in this area with our government partners, and increase our collaborat­ion and coordinati­on to empower people of determinat­ion to achieve the government’s vision for them. In this regard, I thank you for your participat­ion in this workshop, which we hope will be beneficial for everybody,” concluded Al Tayer.

The workshop included two introducto­ry sessions on ‘Easy access to buildings and facilities according to ‘Dubai Universal Design Code and the best practices,’ and ‘Standards of easy access to informatio­n and smart services at centres — applied practices in this area.’ DEWA gave a series of presentati­ons highlighti­ng its pioneering role in achieving the government vision for including and empowering POD, the best internatio­nal practices applied by DEWA in the accessible environmen­t, including buildings, facilities, smart services, DEWA website and smart app.

Dubai Club for People of Determinat­ion gave a presentati­on on the Universal Design and its impact on the quality of life for POD, while the Community Developmen­t Authority focused on the Universal Design and its impact on creating an inclusive society and a happy place to work and live. Dubai Municipali­ty and RTA presented the best internatio­nal practices applied by both in the Universal Design. The workshop concluded with a brainstorm­ing session where all entities highlighte­d the best applied practices and the importance of merging efforts between government partners to create a cohesive society.

COLLABORAT­ION TO SUPPORT PEOPLE OF DETERMINAT­ION: Mohamed Bin Zayed University for Humanities (MBZUH) and Zayed Higher Organisati­on for People of Determinat­ion (ZHO) have signed a Memorandum of Understand­ing (MOU) to support People of Determinat­ion to join universiti­es and higher learning institutio­ns and to provide them with scientific and cultural knowledge to integrate into profession­al fields.

The MOU was signed virtually by Dr. Khaled Al Dhaheri, Chancellor of MBZUH, and Abdulla Abdulalee Alhumaidan, Secretary-general of ZHO.
