Jadeja steers Chennai to win over Bangalore; Delhi beat Hyderabad in Super Over

-

MUMBAI: Ravindra Jadeja scored a blistering 62 off 28 balls and captured three wickets to help Chennai Super Kings (CSK) end Royal Challengers Bangalore’s (RCB) unbeaten run with an emphatic 69-run win in the IPL here on Sunday .

Jadeja dismissed Washington Sundar before taking the wickets of the dangerous Glenn Maxwell and AB de Villiers at the Wankhede Stadium.

He also effected Dan Christian’s run out with a direct hit as RCB were restricted to 122/9 wickets in 20 overs in reply to CSK’S 191/4 wickets in 20 overs.

RCB got off to a good start to the chase with an opening partnership of 44 runs between Devdut Padikkal and captain Virat Kohli. Padikkal, who scored his maiden IPL century in the previous match, scored 34 runs off just 15 balls.

Their partnership was broken when Kohli fell to Sam Curran. Shardul Thakur then dismissed Devdut Padikkal ater which the floodgates opened for CSK.

Spinners Jadeja and Imran Tahir wreaked havoc on the RCB bating lineup as they went from 54/2 in fith over to 94/8 in the 14th. Tahir ended the match with figures of 2/16.

Earlier, Jadeja smashed 37 runs off the last over of the CSK innings. The all-rounder hit five sixes - including one off a no ball -- and a four off Harshal Patel, who had taken three wickets and conceded only 14 runs in the three overs he bowled previously.

Jadeja ended the innings on 62 off just 28 balls, hiting four fours in addition to the five sixes. He put up a fith-wicket partnership of 49 runs off 17 balls with captain MS Dhoni who contributed just two runs in it ( 2 not out off 3 balls).

Jadeja’s rampage made the 20th over of the innings the joint most expensive in the IPL’S history. Chris Gayle had scored 37 runs for RCB off Prasanth Parameswaran against Kochi Tuskers Kerala in 2011.

Kohli has been fined Rs 12 lakh for his team’s slow over rate during their Indian IPL match against Chennai on Sunday.

“As it was his team’s first offence of the season under the IPL’S Code of Conduct relating to minimum over rate offences, Mr Kohli was fined Rs 12 lakh,” said the IPL in a statement.

RCB’S unbeaten run was ended by CSK on Sunday at the Wankhede Stadium on Sunday with all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja leading the three-time champions to a 69-run win.

Jadeja smashed 37 runs off the last over of CSK’S innings to finish unbeaten on 62 off just 28 balls and propel them to 191/4. He then recorded figures of 3/13, dismissing the dangerous AB de Villiers, Glenn Maxwell, and Washington Sundar.

Delhi Capitals (DC) beat Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in what was the first Super Over of the 2021 Indian Premier League (IPL) on Sunday at the MA Chidambaram Stadium.

SRH, who sent in captain David Warner and Kane Williamson, managed to take just seven runs in their Super Over which was bowled by Axar Patel. One run was deducted from SRH’S tally due to captain Warner not puting his bat completely over the crease for the last run.

Captain Rishabh Pant and Shikhar Dhawan walked out for the run chase while spinner Rashid Khan bowled for SRH. The batsmen took two runs off the first two balls before Pant hit a four off the third. The next ball, however, went for a dot ater which the batsmen stole two runs off the last two balls to take DC over the line.

In a separate development, Rajasthan Royals fast bowler Andrew Tye has flown back home to Australia due to personal reasons, the Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise said on Sunday.

Tye is the third overseas player for RR to be ruled out for the season.

“AJ Tye flew back to Australia earlier today due to personal reasons. We will continue to offer any support he may need .# royals family ,” said RR in a tweet on Sunday.

Tye, who had won the Purple Cap in 2018, hadn’t featured in any of RR’S games so far and played just one match last season. He ended up conceding 50 runs in four overs.

Apart from Tye, England duo Liam Livingstone and Ben Stokes let RR during the season. Livingstone returned citing bubble fatigue while Stokes sustained a finger injury during RR’S first game of the season. Fast bowler Jofra Archer, meanwhile, didn’t travel to India with an injury and has been ruled out for the season.
