PML-N president accuses FIA of harassment

- Tariq Butt

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Muslim League-nawaz (PML-N) President Shahbaz Sharif has accused the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) of harassment during interrogation, a charge that the FIA denied.

The allegations came during a hearing at a Lahore court where Shahbaz appeared in relation to his bail application.

“The FIA’S investigation team treated me inappropriately and the officers used to engage in pointless conversations. When I asked why they were doing this, the FIA officers kept laughing and making fun of me,” he claimed.

Shahbaz told the court that he and his family suffered a loss of billions of rupees when it came to operating the Ramzan sugar mills. “I opposed the members of my family and provided the commodity to the masses cheaply.”

The PML-N leader said that he had already responded to the allegations of taking commissions in projects. The interim bail of Shahbaz and his son, Hamza, in the alleged financial scandal was extended till Aug.2.

In its response, a FIA spokesman rejected the allegations levelled by Shahbaz and said that there was no question of harassment or misbehaviour with the PML-N president. He said that Shahbaz was treated with great respect and added that he did not give serious answers to the questions.

“If Shahbaz was asked about billions of rupees deposited in his accounts, he would reply that he had launched Metro Bus and Orange Line trains in Lahore. When he was asked why his employees deposited billions of rupees in his and his family’s accounts, he would respond by saying that he served Punjab a lot.”

The spokesperson said when they inquired about the vehicles and properties he owned, he told them to ask these questions from his children. “He said his lawyers will answer questions about the billions of rupees sent from abroad. He used to give such responses and said the question and answer must not be made public.”

Separately, PML-N Vice President Maryam Nawaz has said that the “selected” leader in Pakistan, a thinly veiled reference to Prime

Minister Imran Khan, was neither respected at home nor abroad.

Addressing a campaign rally for the July 25 general election to the Azad Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly (AJKLA) at Sharda in the Neelum Valley, she said that the people of Kashmir will win their freedom under the leadership of Nawaz Sharif.
